Almost all the world-wide electric power Systems, included the Brazilian one, have experienced problems in relation to the high loading levei of transmission lines, caused by the lack of investment to compensate the growing power demand. Aiming to solve this problem, it was developed, in the eighties, a technology denominated FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems), which employed passive elements as resistors, reactors and capacitors in its first family. In the most recent generation equipments, these elements were substituted by modem inverters, thanks to the evolution of power electronics and, more specifically, high power semiconductor switches like GTOs.
